Introduction of the workshop:

The workshop aims to provide participants with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills designing efficient geometries while leveraging data and visualization techniques to gain insights into the performance of their designs. Participants will learn the fundamentals of parametric design, structural analysis, and optimization techniques, enabling them to create structure-aware and visually appealing architectural and engineering designs.

Objectives:

  • Introduce participants to the principles of parametric design, structural efficiency, and data visualization for architectural and engineering projects.
  • Familiarize participants with Karamba3D and its capabilities for structural analysis, optimization, and performance-driven design.
  • Familiarize participants with Speckle and its capabilities for platform interoperability, automation and version control.
  • Develop participants skills in Rhino/Grasshopper 3D to analyze, optimize, and visualize parametric designs.
  • Demonstrate real-world case studies and examples that showcase the integration of parametric design, structural efficiency, and data visualization.
  • Experiment, research and document through iterative hands-on exercises.
  • Incentivise collaboration and knowledge transfer among participants through conversations and design feedback.

Methodology and learning topics:

  • Introduction to parametric design and structural design principles in architectural and engineering projects.
  • Overview of the Grasshopper 3D plugins Karamba3D, EleFront and Speckle for structural analysis, data transfer and embedding.
  • Parametric modeling strategies for generating structurally efficient geometries.
  • Integrating real time data visualization techniques into the design process to communicate structural performance and design analytics.
The workshop will be conducted as a combination of presentations, tutorials, and hands-on exercises. Participants will have the opportunity to apply the concepts learned through practical design exercises. Participants will also have opportunities for Q&A sessions, discussions, and design critiques to enhance their understanding and receive feedback.
