Robert McNeel & Associates, is an American, privately held, employee-owned company founded in 1980. Rhinoceros 3D, their most used product, is based on the NURBS mathematical model, which focuses on producing a mathematically precise representation of curves and freeform surfaces in computer graphics. Today, Rhino together with Grasshopper 3d is among the most used software in the architecture and design industry. I’m sure you all have used this software and know what are its capabilities.
Their most renowned software, Rhinoceros 3D, is primarily a freeform surface modeler that utilizes the NURBS mathematical model. Rhinoceros’s application architecture and open SDK make it modular and enable the user to customize the interface and create custom commands and menus. There are dozens of plug-ins available from McNeel and other software companies that complement and expand Rhinoceros’s capabilities in specific fields, such as rendering and animation, architecture, marine, jewelry, engineering, prototyping, and others.
For the first fifteen years, the company was focused on replacing drafting tables with productive AutoCAD systems. Much of their new software development focused on using AutoCAD drawings and related data in all business processes, including design, planning, marketing, and maintenance.
For more than 20 years, they were also focused on developing, publishing, and supporting Rhino and related products for designers, engineers, fabricators, and their support staff.
