The Seoul Twin Eye is an observation wheel designed by UNStudio in collaboration with Arup and local firm Heerim Architecture. It was initiated by the Seoul Metropolitan Government for Sangam World Cup Park in Seoul.
The 180-metre-high structure has 64 capsules, each accommodating 20-25 people at once. It can provide rides to more than 1,400 people simultaneously, almost double the capacity of the London Eye.
“Located in the heart of the city, this spokeless design references Korea’s boundless ambition for innovation and spirit of progress, seamlessly blending cutting-edge technology with a timeless appreciation for stability and beauty,” says Ben van Berkel, founder and principal architect of UNStudio.
The observation wheel is inspired by the Honcheonsigye. “The design team focused on the concept of unity, and the design is inspired by the Honcheonsigye, an astronomical clock that represents the movement of celestial objects through time.” states the UNStudio. Also, the proposal included plans to build a monorail connecting the subway station to the Ferris wheel.
Lately, UNStudio has won multiple competitions for designing mixed-use developments in various locations including Düsseldorf, Qatar, and Nanjing.
