  Not A Hotel

Bjarke Ingels Group-BIG unveiled a glimpse of their new hotel project on Sagishima Island in collaboration with hospitality group Not A Hotel.

The structure situated on top of the island blends with topography and features a curved roof. The structures view the Seto Inland Sea and are inspired by Japanese landscape paintings.

“Traditional Danish modern architecture is, in fact, very informed by traditional Japanese architecture. The simplicity, the absence of ornament in favor of careful and thoughtful detailing, the kind of choice of materials, Danish idea of democratic design, and, in turn, I would say, contemporary Japanese fruitful conversation going between Danish and Japanese culture,” said Bjarke Ingels on their collaboration.

“We are very excited to continue this conversation and into the future. It is a very dense and dramatic archipelago of sort of undulating silhouettes of green hilly islands. It almost looks like a traditional Japanese, and in that sense, it is a very exciting and almost quintessentially Japanese canvas to work with as an architect.” he added, “So far, the collaboration has been incredible, and I look forward to spending my first night in the results of our collaboration.”
