“As artificial intelligence continues to permeate industries like architecture, engineering, and construction, designers are now generating astonishing concepts of intricate structures and buildings. Yet, a natural question arises: Can these designs transition from the digital realm to reality? The resounding answer is yes.” said Arturo Tedeschi.

The concept image was designed by Arturo Tedeschi, who is a computational designer with a keen interest in AI-powered design tools. He used Midjourney and Stable Diffusion to explore various design possibilities, eventually resulting in a 3D mesh model. This was achieved through an algorithmic edge detector, a triangulation algorithm, and manual refinement. To create such a complex model, Arturo used StudFinder, an intelligent fabrication tool developed by STUD-IO. This software streamlined the modeling and detailing process, providing precision in the mockup’s creation.

According to designers, it also automatically generated manufacturable solutions, taking into account fabrication and assembly constraints. Once the design was finalized, machine files were generated for a FrameCAD steel stud roll-forming machine located at Wies Offsite, a construction company based in St. Louis, Missouri. Wies Offsite then fabricated and assembled the frames for this mockup in a single day, thanks to the software’s precision and customization features that ensured seamless fitting of all components.

“This project is a testament to the growing importance of AI and parametric tools in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry. It showcases the role of AI beyond generating visual designs, playing a pivotal role in the entire design and construction process from start to finish.”This project exemplifies the growing significance and utility of AI and parametric tools in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry. It showcases how AI extends beyond the realm of generating visual representations of conceptual designs, playing a pivotal role from initial design phases to construction implementation.” said Tedeschi.
