As part of a 117,000 sqm mixed-use development for the Shibuya Upper West Project for Tokyu Corporation that includes the Bunkamura cultural complex and will offer high-quality retail, a contemporary luxury hotel, and rental residences, Snøhetta designed a 36-story mixed-use tower, which is currently under construction and is expected to be completed in 2027.

“We aim to design for the future and aspire to find the most sustainable solutions, contributing to Japan’s goal of being carbon-neutral by 2050,” said Robert Greenwood, Partner and director of Asia Pacific.

The project was designed to create an “Urban Retreat,” a place where people can relax and find peace amidst the hustle and bustle of the city. The project has two main areas: The Hive, a lively central space that brings people together, and The Sanctuary, a peaceful area with beautiful rooftop gardens where visitors can unwind and de-stress.

The tower’s shape draws inspiration from the contrasting nature of Tokyo. It forms a horizontal connection with Shibuya and its surroundings, while also creating a striking vertical accent. The ceramic-clad facade pays homage to traditional Japanese building techniques.

Also, Nikken Sekkei Ltd and Tokyu Architects & Engineers INC collaborated on the project.
