Downtown Cary Park in North Carolina has become an important public space for the town, bringing together nature, community activities, and contemporary design. The 7-acre park was completed in 2023 as part of a long-term plan to strengthen Cary’s downtown and create a central place for recreation, events, and everyday gathering. Among the park’s most striking elements is L’île Folie Pavilion, a sculptural aluminum structure designed by Marc Fornes / THEVERYMANY. Positioned on a small artificial island within the park, the structure works both as public art and as a usable pavilion. Rising above the water, the project offers visitors a quiet place to pause, gather, or enjoy views of the landscape.

The Design Concept Behind the L’île Folie Pavilion
The concept of L’île Folie draws from the historical idea of architectural folly, small decorative structures often placed within large landscape gardens. Traditionally, follies were designed to surprise visitors and create moments of discovery during a walk through a park.

In Cary Park, this idea is reinterpreted in a contemporary way. The pavilion stands on a constructed island surrounded by water, making the structure visible from many parts of the park. Visitors reach it by crossing a bridge, turning the journey itself into part of the experience.

Lightweight Aluminum Canopy Structure
The pavilion is formed from ultra-thin folded aluminum panels assembled into a continuous shell. Thousands of individually fabricated pieces are connected with rivets to create the curved canopy. There is no separate hidden frame; the outer skin itself provides structural strength.

The canopy rises about 31 feet above the island, forming a branching, cocoon-like shape that gathers overhead and creates a sheltered space below. Small perforations across the aluminum surface allow sunlight to pass through, producing changing patterns of light and shadow throughout the day.

The pavilion’s open form keeps it visually light while still defining a clear place to gather. During daylight hours, the reflective aluminum interacts with the surrounding pond and landscape, while at night, integrated lighting transforms the structure into a glowing feature within the park.

Through this combination of structural precision and sculptural form, L’île Folie demonstrates how contemporary pavilion design can enrich public parks.
