Curvilinear Concepts

Introduction to Curvilinear Concepts:

In the Curvilinear Concepts workshop, students will learn how to create curvilinear architectural forms similar to those designed by MAD Architects and Zaha Hadid Architects (for reference only). We will use generative artificial intelligence to create these forms and then use a 3D modeling tool to create a unique geometry. We will prompt crafting using Midjourney V6 or lower to develop sophisticated and complex building design concepts. Through an iterative process, we will arrive at our desired results, which can be highly iterative for precise outcomes. Examples of projects we will work on include a high-density housing complex, a Google campus, etc.

The scope of the workshop:

The Curvilinear Concepts workshop aims to use Midjourney to create fluid or curvilinear shapes ranging from the scale of individual products to entire cities. Once we’ve generated the desired form, we’ll replicate or modify it using programs such as Autodesk Maya, Rhinoceros, and Grasshopper. Finally, depending on the product size, we will render the design using Enscape or Keyshot. Throughout the process, we will ensure that our geometry is clean, easy to handle, and suitable for 3D printing.

Methodology:

  • During the Curvilinear Concepts workshop, the students will be given a general tutorial on prompt crafting for Midjourney and then given time to generate attractive, complex, and sophisticated forms for Midjourney, most likely a large-scale architectural project. Each student can focus on developing different project parts, such as façade, interiors, furniture, lighting, textures, etc.
  • Participants will then be given a basic introduction to Maya and Rhinoceros initially to get the hang of the tool with a specific form, procedural 3D Modelling from a primitive polygon, or using Rhino/Grasshopper to generate the form.
  • After that, the exercise will be combinatorial, using the generated form and replicating/altering it on the 3D Modelling tool.
  • The students will also receive a basic tutorial on rendering their images using Enscape or Keyshot.

Objectives of the Curvilinear Concepts:

Participants will be able to produce the following:

  • Intelligently craft prompts and generate high-quality images via Midjourney.
  • Extrapolate geometry from the generated images and translate that into a 3D Model in a creative manner.
  • Render of their models with scale figures.

Software:

  • Midjourney 6.0 Access
  • Autodesk Maya 2020 and higher versions
  • Rhinoceros 7 with Grasshopper/Lunchbox plugin
  • Enscape plugin for Rhinoceros (Realtime Rendering)
  • Luxion Keyshot

System Requirements:

  • 16 Gigabytes RAM and upwards.
  • 1060 6GB Integrated Graphics and upwards.

Program of the workshop:

Day 1

  • Introduction to the workshop, Student Introductions, Basics of Midjourney
  • Prompt Crafting and Generation
  • Midjourney Experimentation (Individual Group Tutorials in the same hour)
  • Final Outputs from Midjourney (Presentations by each team)
  • Q&A

Day 2

Important notes:

  • The “Curvilinear Concepts AI Innovation to 3D Modeling” Studio workshop by PAACADEMY will start on Saturday, May 18th & 19th, 2024, at 16:00 (GMT).
  • Total sessions: 2 Sessions
  • The teaching duration per session will be 4-5 hours.
  • Students will have time for a break between teaching hours.
  • Each session and the entire studio will be recorded, and videos will be available for participants just a day after the class for unlimited time.
  • PAACADEMY will provide a certificate of attendance.
