Introduction

AI-Augmented Creative Workflows: Generative Techniques

Text-to-image diffusion models are an accessible way for artists, architects, and designers to experiment with Artificial Intelligence. MidJourney is one such platform that engages our imaginations and lets us explore and test design ideas in a fraction of the time it would traditionally take to draw, model, or render. Joshua Vermillion will lead this MidJourney workshop emphasizing ways to integrate this platform into your existing creative workflows. AI doesn’t replace other design tools; it augments them, and this program is all about leveraging MidJourney to augment your design workflows.

The Scope of the Workshop:

This fast-paced workshop will cover a range of techniques for integrating AI into your design workflows. AI tools can connect with and augment a variety of mediums—analog and digital. Their generative capacity makes them particularly adept at augmenting the early stages of the creative process. As there is no “one way” to use AI, we will cover various techniques that take advantage of the multi-modal aspects of large-language models that allow for varied inputs to generate multiple outcomes.

Part of the value of using a diffusion model like MidJourney is its multi-modal capabilities. You can feed it words, images, and photographs to generate novel outputs. The first session of this workshop will emphasize the interchange of words and images: text-to-image, image-to-text, and image-to-image techniques. The second session will address newer techniques, such as defining styles with a style tuner and new open-source experimental tools that generate 3D point clouds from images (image-to-3d).

Both sessions will use a combination of demonstrations followed by hands-on individual design challenges. Participants are encouraged to have examples of their own process sketches, models, and photos to use throughout the workshop.

Objectives

By the end of this workshop, participants will have demonstrated and practiced several techniques in MidJourney for developing their design ideas and generating visually compelling design imagery. Along the way, we will learn about many of the settings in MidJourney that can help us iteratively work through an idea and integrate it into your creative processes. Ultimately, everyone will come away with many ways to weave AI into their design process to augment their creative endeavors.

Program:

Session 1: Saturday, March 23rd

  • Text-to-image Techniques: MadLibs-style descriptive writing
  • Image-to-text Techniques: Reverse-engineering an image using the Describe command
  • Image-to-image Techniques: Combining and blending images and effects
  • Individual Challenge: Combining Techniques

Session 2: Sunday, March 24th

  • Discussion and Sharing of Design Challenge Results
  • Style-to-image Techniques: searching and narrowing the latent space with a style tuner
  • Image-to-model Techniques: Depth-mapping tools for generating 3D point clouds from 2d images
  • Team Challenge: Sharing Techniques

Software:

  • MidJourney (subscription required, standard membership recommended)
  • Create an account and subscription at midjourney.com
  • Discord (required) Press here to download  Discord is free for Windows, Mac OS, iOS, and Android OS. MidJourney runs through
  • While course content will focus on Midjourney, there is no “one-size-fits-all” AI tool. Dall-E + Chat GPT are alternatives for much of the course content if you prefer these. A Free OpenAI account is recommended.

Instructor:

Joshua Vermillion

Joshua Vermillion is a tenured Associate Professor in the School of Architecture at UNLV. Forging a multi-year career in the exploration, development and execution of “Digital Craft,” his efforts in research, pedagogy and practice belong to three primary categories: digital information as medium (computational, parametric and algorithmic design); digital information as material (digital fabrication tools and techniques); and digital information as method (situated technologies, responsive systems, and robotics). Joshua has published and presented his peer- reviewed research and design work worldwide while continuing to experiment with novel design technologies such as AI diffusion models like MidJourney and Stable Diffusion.
