Plasti.Care is a master thesis project by Naomi Neururer as part of Studio Greg Lynn at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, Institute of Architecture.
Project Goals
The project’s goal is to highlight the potential of recycled plastic as a long-lasting material for architectural construction, challenging the widely-held view of plastic as a quick, throwaway substance. The focus is on showing the structural and architectural opportunities presented by using recycled plastic as a single material.

The self-care center is designed as a single-floor, mat building typology and spans an area of 75 by 48m. The idea is that there is no defined circulation path, but multiple pathways to reach different programs, which allow the visitors to explore at their own speed and needs.
Material Characteristics
The material characteristics of recycled plastic are the driving force behind its structural qualities: the curved form, derived from industrial prefabrication and plastic panel bending; the transparency, offering new prospects for spatial division and various degrees of privacy; and the strengthened structural integrity achieved by integrating fibers and reinforcements into the plastic panels. These elements open up new architectural possibilities, culminating in the establishment of a SelfCare Center that showcases the potential of recycled plastic. With the escalating concerns about burnout, stress, and mental health in today’s fast-paced society, there is a growing focus on personal development, mindfulness, and inner equilibrium.
Inspiration from Sacred Architecture
Taking inspiration from the quiet attributes of sacred architecture, the SelfCare Center is meticulously crafted to nurture these virtues. It encompasses areas for communal engagement, contemplation, and serenity, embellished with art and ornamentation. The project spatially and atmospherically investigates these attributes by producing a collection of recycled plastic prototypes. These tangible trials laid the groundwork for establishing the varied atmospheres within the project.
The center establishes diverse atmospheric environments that foster self-assurance, strength, and mental well-being. Step into a structure where individuals can commence their self-care journey and cultivate communal connections.
