OpenAI Releases Native Windows App for ChatGPT

After publishing its ChatGPT application for Mac earlier this year, OpenAI has introduced a native desktop application on Microsoft Windows. The app is currently available to ChatGPT Plus, Enterprise, Team, and Edu subscribers. Similar functionality is expected to be available on the desktop application for users who access the application via the internet, requiring at least Windows 10 to function.

Like its Mac-based sibling, the Windows app will let users open a separate window and ask questions while running other applications. It also supports both file and photo uploads and offers access to OpenAI’s new o1 model, which boosts “reasoning” abilities. To make things even faster, you’ll be able to open the app with an Alt + Space keyboard shortcut.

ChatGPT’s New Features on Windows

These additions notwithstanding, the Windows application remains a test version and hence contains some missing features. Presently, it does not support advanced voice features or authentication with various services such as Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, and GPT Builder. OpenAI has, however, confirmed to users that these features will be included in the full version of the app.

OpenAI plans to expand general access for the app by the end of the year. For now, it’s open only to subscribers to the company’s features, but the new user experience is in works and expansion to more users will be made available soon.
