At Expo 2025 Osaka, the Luxembourg Pavilion presents a compelling fusion of sustainable architecture and immersive storytelling. Designed by Luxembourg-based STDM architectes urbanistes in collaboration with Japanese firm Mikan, the pavilion embodies the theme “Doki Doki – The Luxembourg Heartbeat,” drawing from the Japanese onomatopoeia for a heartbeat to symbolize excitement and anticipation.

The pavilion’s architecture is a testament to circular economy principles. Constructed with modular components, it is designed for disassembly, allowing materials to be reused or recycled post-Expo. The structure comprises four key elements: concrete mega blocks for the foundation, rigid steel frames, a lightweight membrane roof, and reusable exterior cladding made from local standard formwork panels.

Inside, the pavilion offers an interactive three-act scenography developed by the studio jangled nerves. Visitors journey through “The World Lab,” “The Family of Man,” and “The Common Home,” exploring Luxembourg’s innovations, multicultural identity, and commitment to sustainability. This narrative is enhanced by dynamic lighting and sound installations that evoke the rhythmic “heartbeat” motif.

The pavilion also features a courtyard where guests can experience Luxembourg’s “savoir-vivre” through traditional cuisine and a nine-pin bowling alley, known as “Keelebunn” in Luxembourgish, offering a cultural touchpoint that connects visitors to the nation’s heritage.

By integrating sustainable design with cultural expression, the Luxembourg Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka exemplifies how architecture can reflect national identity while promoting global themes of innovation and environmental responsibility.
