Frisco Public Library, Texas

Rapidly growing city, Frisco, Texas, has experienced urbanisation and population growth over the last decades. This growth in a city required public spaces that help people to connect, share, and learn. Frisco Public Library, situated in Frisco Square, becomes the city’s urban core, which is easily accessible to users. In the evolving narrative of libraries, it offers dynamic spaces for community engagement, education, and recreational activities.
“When we started planning this new library, we wanted it to become a source of community pride for the community of Frisco. I think we’ve exceeded anyone’s expectations. I think there’s going to be a lot of ‘wow’ moments from the public when they walk through those doors for the first time.“
—Jeff Cheney, City of Frisco Mayor

Opened in 2023, it transformed the traditional notion of libraries by providing a functional, diverse space of belonging. Designers and the City of Frisco decided to reuse the existing building elements and retain its structural integrity while providing a new identity to the city’s sustainable goals and artistic narrative.
Design philosophy

Frisco Public Library illustrates Gensler’s notion of crafting spaces that encourage human connection and enhance dense urban fabric, responding to the sustainable surroundings. The human-centric design for the library adopted dynamic, adaptable spaces for creativity, inspiration, promoting community engagement, and not just a place to read or stockpile books. Constructed as a community epicentre, it is planned to be a place where people come together to discover, engage, and develop patterns of knowing new things.

This multipurpose building is easily accessible for everyone, from children to adults, serving a variety of purposes: a quiet corner for reading, communal seating for discussion, display areas for exhibitions, and digital spaces for programming as a cohesive space. Reflecting on the city’s vibrant culture and surroundings, the open plan layout with large windows highlighted transparency and connection to the outside. Reinforcing the notion of openness, the building’s interiors are flexible and modular for various programs, events, and collaborative work. Incorporating the adjustable vision, designers reconfigurable spaces to fit different types of activities from individual privacy to collaborative spaces.
Spatial design

The journey of the Frisco Public Library starts from Frisco City, which transformed from a small agricultural centre to a dynamic suburban town welcoming people to inspire intellect, wonder, and explore a diverse spectrum of learning. Entering through the striking and functional central atrium, visitors feel a strong sense of belonging that is engaging, inspiring, and connecting.
The inviting, natural light-filled spaces contribute to the community-oriented approach, representing the spirit of Frisco. Sustainability was the key design feature that comprised recycled materials, energy-efficient techniques to reduce the environmental impact, and high-performance glazing that connects to the surroundings. Spatial experience caters to the needs and preferences of users, designed for different age groups.

The open layout incorporates a colourful and playful children’s area with comfortable seating and interactive elements, adult areas comprised of nooks for reading, standing stacks, and individual study facilities. The informal areas for meetings, exhibitions, and workshops foster collaboration and social interaction, while formal, organised spaces provide guidance and service. The functional and inviting spaces integrate technology with easy access to wifi, computer access throughout the library, and modern audiovisual technology.
Sustainable Approach
Responding to the regional architectural context, the Frisco Public Library contributes to the sustainable goals with the use of diverse materials. Brick was the primary material, contributing to its thermal insulation for the built form, regulating interior temperatures, and reducing the use of artificial light.
Connecting to the outdoors, the glazed large windows reinforce openness and accessibility while providing an ample amount of natural light. Constructed with a steel frame and concrete floors, the interiors are free of structural supports. It creates open, large, and multipurpose spaces that are adaptable to the changing modern needs. Reducing the library’s environmental footprint, the built form incorporates LED lighting, high-efficiency HVAC systems and solar panels.
Modern Learning and Community Spaces
