The four main towers of La Basilica de la Sagrada Familia, Gaudi’s magnificent basilica church and a symbol of Barcelona, are finally complete after 141 years of labor. The construction of the church, which began in 1882, will totaly completed in 2026.
“The four towers of the Evangelists are finished! Soon, we’ll be celebrating this building milestone!” the church announced in a Facebook post.
The Sagrada Familia is a Catholic church that remains unfinished and is considered the world’s largest. It is often compared to Spanish Late Gothic, Catalan Modernism, and Art Nouveau architectural styles. Gaudi, who designed the church, included 18 spindle-shaped towers, each dedicated to a different biblical figure, including the 12 apostles, four evangelists, the Virgin Mary, and Jesus.
In addition to six other Gaud buildings in Barcelona, a portion of la Sagrada Familia is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as evidence of “Gaud’s exceptional creative contribution to the development of architecture and building technology,” “having represented el Modernisme of Catalonia,” and “having anticipated and influenced many of the forms and techniques that were relevant to the development of modern construction in the 20th century.” Only the Crypt and the Nativity Facade are mentioned in the inscription.
