Bahrain Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka: Weaving Maritime Heritage into Sustainable Architecture

At Expo 2025 Osaka, the Kingdom of Bahrain presents “Connecting Seas,” a pavilion that eloquently intertwines its rich maritime legacy with forward-thinking sustainable design. Conceived by architect Lina Ghotmeh, the structure draws inspiration from traditional Bahraini dhow boats, reflecting the nation’s historical role as a nexus of trade and cultural exchange.​

Spanning 995 square meters and rising between 13 to 17 meters, the pavilion is constructed from approximately 3,000 pieces of unengineered wood, assembled using intricate joinery techniques. This approach not only pays homage to Bahraini craftsmanship but also incorporates Japanese woodworking traditions, symbolizing a fusion of cultures. The design emphasizes sustainability through passive cooling, minimal foundations, and the use of reusable materials, positioning it as one of the Expo’s most environmentally conscious structures. ​

Inside, visitors embark on a multisensory journey curated by the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities. The exhibition, developed in collaboration with artists and studios such as Shepherd Studio, Sissel Tolaas, Hassan Hujairi, and La Méduse, explores themes of trade, craftsmanship, pearling, and ecology. Through art, music, and interactive installations, the pavilion narrates Bahrain’s enduring relationship with the sea and its influence on the nation’s identity. ​

Complementing the exhibition, the pavilion features a café offering a fusion of Bahraini and Japanese cuisines, curated by award-winning chef Tala Bashmi. A dedicated business floor, developed by Bahrain’s Economic Development Board, showcases the Kingdom’s strategic position as a global economic hub. Additionally, pavilion staff and volunteers don exclusive attire designed by Bahraini fashion designer Lulwa Al Amin, featuring motifs inspired by coastal elements, further reinforcing the pavilion’s thematic coherence. ​

“Connecting Seas” stands as a testament to Bahrain’s commitment to honoring its heritage while embracing sustainable innovation. Through its architectural design and immersive experiences, the pavilion invites visitors to reflect on the interconnectedness of cultures and the shared responsibility of shaping a sustainable future.
