Polyhedral Graphical Statics: For Funicular Structural Form Finding

Polyhedral Graphic Statics is a geometry-based structural design method based on polyhedral reciprocal diagrams first proposed by Rankine and Maxwell 150 years ago. Providing a unique design guide for structural form finding of efficient spatial structures, this book offers up-to-date insights into the field of geometry-based structural design. The author introduces a different design domain, the force domain, and explains the relationship between the geometry of efficient structural forms and the geometric equilibrium of forces called the force diagram.

Beginning with step-by-step geometric methods to construct the reciprocal force diagram for simple structural forms, the book then advances to more articulated systems. These include spatial compression-only forms and systems with mixed tensile and compressive forces. Presenting computational applications, the text provides an algebraic formulation for form finding in 3D. Discover the applications of this pioneering method in Material Science, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace, and the design of carbon-absorbing structures.

Whether you’re an architect exploring form through Rhino and Grasshopper or an engineer focused on equilibrium and forces, Polyhedral Graphical Statics is a valuable reference. It’s a timely resource for anyone interested in integrating geometry, structure, and visual thinking into the design process.

About the Author

Masoud Akbarzadeh holds a Dr. Sc. from the Institute of Technology in Architecture, ETH Zurich. He holds two degrees from MIT: a Master of Science in Architecture Studies (Computation) and an M.Arch, the thesis for which earned him the renowned SOM award. He also has a degree in Earthquake Engineering and Dynamics of Structures from the Iran University of Science and Technology and a BS in Civil and Environmental Engineering.

His main research topic is Three-Dimensional Graphical Statics, a novel geometric method of structural design in three dimensions. Masoud Akbarzadeh is a designer with a unique academic background and experience in architectural design, computation, and structural engineering. He is an Associate (tenured) Professor of Architecture in Structures and Advanced Technologies and the Director of the Polyhedral Structures Laboratory (PSL). His main research topic is Three-Dimensional Graphical Statics, a novel geometric method of structural design in three dimensions. In 2020, he received the National Science Foundation CAREER Award for extending the methods of 3D/Polyhedral Graphic Statics for Education, Design, and Optimization of High-Performance Structures.

If you’re interested in hearing directly from Masoud Akbarzadeh, you can catch him as one of the featured speakers in Design Tech Talk 4.0, hosted by PAACADEMY, where he shares his thoughts on computation, structure, and innovation in architectural design.
