ICON unveils the first-of-its-kind 3D-printed housing in Texas

ICON, a world leader in 3D printing with various projects across USA and Mexico, is working towards low carbon sustainable residences with their new development in Wimberley Springs Texas, featuring eight family homes each featuring 4-5 bedrooms, making this project a milestone in the 3D printed architectural space.

The project is located amidst the natural backdrop of Wimberley, just 3 miles from Wimberley town centre and 40 miles from Austin connecting technology with nature and developing a comfortable community living space. The development will provide residents access to swimming areas, golf courses, wineries and other recreational areas.

This design is a collaboration with the Bjarke Ingels Group and provides 4-floor plans from ICON’s digital architecture catalog. The construction process for these homes includes robotic 3D printers extruding a cement-like mixture (low-carbon material, CarbonX) to create the home’s walls while physically assembling the windows, roof and wall on site.

The process helps reduce material waste enhancing energy efficiency and is expected to receive the EnergyStar certification from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency indicating they are 45-60% more energy-efficient than standard homes.

Engineered to withstand wind speeds up to 250 mph, the settlement will be equipped with various smart home technologies, smart thermostats etc. The project is designed with contemporary elegance, integrating with the natural landscape, creating an ideal space for homebuyers. Currently priced at $800,000, the Wimberley Springs homes are placed in the luxury housing market, opening doors for innovative, energy-effective housing solutions in the US market.

According to the press release from March 2024 when this project was initially introduced, “ICON’s aim is for CODEX to be the most comprehensive digital catalog of buildable home designs in the world. It empowers ICON customers to select preferred designs as a starting point for their master-planned communities and developments.”

“The picturesque, quaint community of Wimberley is near the pecan tree-lined Cypress Creek. Whether homebuyers are seeking a serene retreat or a family-friendly community, Wimberley Springs is the ideal place to call home.”

This ongoing project now available for sale, is a major new step for ICON who previously worked towards low-cost housing designs. Wimberley Springs is a leap in sustainable luxury housing, changing the face of homebuilding in the coming future.
