Bloomingdale International School in Vijayawada, India, is an exemplary instance of parametric architecture that defies traditional norms and expands the boundaries of education. As the first-of-its-kind institute in Andhra Pradesh, India, The Cocoon, designed by andblack Design Studio, aims to offer unconventional education, surpassing the offerings of other preschools in the region and catalyzing a shift in early education through thoughtful architectural design.

The preschool occupies a 4000 sq. ft. area adjacent to an existing school building, connected by a sunken courtyard that rises towards the new extension as if ascending a hill. The design departs from typical school design norms by conceptualizing classrooms as fluid, interconnected spaces that promote free movement and interactions.

The courtyard adapts itself as a playground, classroom, amphitheater, or puddle pool as needed. Full-height glass panels replace walls and skylights on the roof, integrating the landscape as an extension of the built space and vice versa. The design’s reliance on built form instead of bright colors generates visual interest, with the curved, undulating roof resembling a wave or rolling hills.

The building’s fluid form, covered in turf and resting on an unobstructed structural space, stands out from the rest of the built form, making it a landmark in the area. The structure was achieved within a limited budget by employing an efficient construction process that takes into account readily available resources and technologies.

Prefabricated materials were utilized for the structural core of the roof, with the required curvature achieved by varying the curvature of the beams along the X and Y axes.

In conclusion, Bloomingdale International School is a pioneering example of parametric architecture that challenges conventional norms and pushes the boundaries of education.
