'Duo' by Melek Zeynep Bulut Set to Open at the Old Royal Naval College

The Duo exhibition by Turkish artist and designer Melek Zeynep Bulut will be unveiled at the historic Painted Hall inside the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich, opening from Monday, 28 October to Sunday, 3 November 2024.

Duo is a suspended installation exploring duality and interaction. The inspiration can be drawn from the ancient architecture which, though minimalistic in design, comes in the form of a rectangular prism sharing a sense of closeness psychologically. Featured in this piece of work is an innovative mechanical system interconnected by magnets and sensors. A delicate balance occurs, one which rhythmically changes with viewer movements.

Duality and Interaction

It is an installation that dissolves the line between design and space into a multisensory experience where human interaction is crucial to develop the full potential of the piece. Movements of people determine, in this way, the rhythm of space and the motion of the installation itself while the viewers are operating the work.

At its core, Duo suggests ‘two’, implying dialogue, linkage, and the dynamic tension between center and periphery. Through its interactive design, the installation invites reflection on the balance of forces and the interdependent nature of relationships.

This exhibition offers the rare opportunity to experience Bulut’s visionary approach to design in one of London’s most iconic settings.
