We had an great conversation with Carlos Banon during NATCon, where we explored the role of AI in shaping the future of architecture. He shared how he integrated AI into his design processes and discussed his expectations for its evolving influence on the field. It was a great exchange of ideas, offering a fascinating glimpse into his visionary approach.
Carlos Banon is a Spanish architect and professor of computational design based in Singapore. In 2015, Bañón founded the Architectural Intelligence Research Lab (AirLab) at the Singapore University of Technology and Design, where he leads the integration of AI and digital fabrication in architecture. By merging artificial intelligence with human intuition, he creates projects at the intersection of art and resource efficiency. His groundbreaking work has been showcased at prestigious venues like the Venice Biennale, London Design Museum, and Triennale di Milano, earning him international recognition.
“We’re not just following the old rules anymore; we’re making new ones. It’s like we’ve got this whole new playground for our imagination, making the future feel a lot closer to now.”
Carlos Banon, 2023
Carlos Bañón’s workshops at PAACADEMY focus on integrating AI tools like Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, ControlNet, Grasshopper 3D, and Adobe Photoshop Beta into architectural design. His Taking Control series guides participants in blending AI-driven platforms with traditional design methods. Through hands-on instruction and video tutorials, Bañón demonstrates how to use these technologies to create innovative, resource-efficient architectural solutions, offering a forward-thinking approach to computational design.
