Saudi Arabia has postponed the 2029 Asian Winter Games, originally to take place at the Trojena ski resort within the NEOM mega-project, marking a notable shift in the kingdom’s event hosting roadmap and raising questions about timelines and project feasibility.

The decision was jointly announced by Saudi Arabia’s Olympic and Paralympic Committee and the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), confirming that the 2029 edition will now be held at a later, unspecified date. In place of the full games, Saudi Arabia plans to host a series of winter sports events in the coming years to build momentum and promote the long-term development of winter sports in the region.

The Asian Winter Games were set to be the first held in the Middle East, with Trojena, a mountain resort in the futuristic NEOM city, chosen as the venue when Saudi Arabia won the bid in 2022. However, ongoing construction delays and the immense scale of NEOM infrastructure have made the original timeline difficult to meet, prompting the decision to postpone rather than relocate the event.

NEOM itself is a cornerstone of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s Vision 2030, a $500 billion-plus initiative to diversify Saudi Arabia’s economy beyond oil and position the kingdom as a global hub for tourism, technology, and major sporting events. The postponement exposes broader challenges in delivering such large-scale projects on tight deadlines, even as the country presses ahead with other major commitments, including the 2030 World Expo in Riyadh and the 2034 FIFA World Cup.

While official statements have not cited a single reason for the delay, analysts point to construction setbacks at Trojena and the broader NEOM development as likely contributors, alongside a strategic choice to develop stronger local winter sports participation before staging a multi-sport continental event.

The postponement of the 2029 Asian Winter Games emphasizes the complexity of Saudi Arabia’s efforts to elevate its international sports profile and reflects a recalibration of timelines against logistical and developmental realities.
