Manchester United is set to grant a contract to Foster + Partners for developing a masterplan for the Old Trafford Stadium District in support of designing a football destination for Manchester United fans while developing mixed-use spaces serving the needs of the local community interest for residents, creating jobs, and turning the place into a vibrant visitor hub.
This will be a process with great input from the fans, the community, local authorities, and the Old Trafford Regeneration Task Force-they will contribute to shaping this masterplan.
“As a proud Mancunian, I am passionate about the chance to rebuild on Manchester’s great industrial heritage, creating a vibrant new mixed-use community, served by highly sustainable and improved transport links, providing homes and jobs for the local community, all catalysed by a world-class stadium for the world’s most famous football team – Manchester United.”
Lord Foster, Founder and Executive Chairman, Foster + Partners
Old Trafford Stadium is commonly known as “The Theatre of Dreams,” the iconic home stadium of Manchester United, housing more than 74,000 seated, thus making it one of the largest stadiums in the UK. It opened in 1910 and has hosted many historic matches, such as FA Cup finals and international games.
Over the years, the stadium has undergone several extensions and renovations, yet the feeling of tradition remains and symbolizes Manchester United’s rich history and support worldwide. The new master plan aims to enhance the surroundings of the stadium without taking anything away from its legacy as an important part of the identity of the club.
“We want this area to become a true destination, that not only provides an unbeatable matchday experience for our fans, but also supports other forms of entertainment, leisure, business and residential facilities surrounding a world-class stadium. Lord Foster has unrivalled experience in delivering projects of this scale and ambition.”
Collette Roche, Manchester United Chief Operating Officer
Foster + Partners will also provide recommendations on how the Stadium District masterplan aligns with the existing Trafford Wharfside masterplan and the wider regional ambitions set by the Greater Manchester Combined Authority.
