Yong Ju Lee Architecture office designed a grandstand seating area for the Yonggok Middle School’s football field that integrates with the surrounding structures.
Yong Ju Lee Architecture office has designed a tribune area at Yonggok Middle School in Seoul, South Korea. This design primarily serves as tribune seating for the soccer field, embraced by the surrounding school structures. More than function as a tribune, it’s a transformative space at the east edge of the field, seamlessly blending functionality with aesthetics.
Yonggok Middle School
Beyond its fundamental role, this architectural attempt evolves into a versatile and dynamic area, carefully crafted to cater to a spectrum of activities, from relaxation and social gatherings to intimate performances. To achieve these objectives, the fluid ribbon-like formations serve as the primary design element, offering seating while seamlessly accommodating various functions and infusing the space with a tangible sense of liveliness.
Design Approach
Stretching across a significant span of 145 meters with a slim depth profile, the flowing bands play a crucial role in blending form and function harmoniously. These bands transcend mere tables, dynamically molding the space and its interactions. In contrast to the wooden bands functioning as steps, the white bands undulate gracefully, creating diverse configurations and spaces, culminating in a compact yet versatile performance area at the heart of the design.
Accompanied by ribbons, white and colored boxes suggest additional rhythm by interrupting the linear formation and providing seating and planters. The essence of this concept aims to move beyond conventional spectator seating, introducing an interactive space that celebrates adaptability and versatility, injecting vitality into the Yonggok Middle School’s architectural landscape.
Internally, a robust framework of steel pipes and elevated platforms accented subtly with metallic touches harmonize with a thoughtfully curated palette of colors and lighting, elevating the overall visual appeal and atmosphere. The white bands play a pivotal role in reshaping the physical structure and functional essence, fostering a culture of innovation and adaptability within the Yonggok Middle School community, and propelling the architectural landscape toward new realms of creativity and purpose.
