Foster + Partners announced plans to reconstruct Antakya (Hatay, Turkiye) after the February 6, 2023 earthquake. It’s part of a comprehensive plan by the Turkish Design Foundation to rebuild Turkey.
On the previous Friday, the Marrakech–Asfi region in Morocco experienced an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8. According to a report by Al Jazeera, the number of fatalities resulting from the recent incident has reached a minimum of 3,000 individuals.
The recent earthquake in Southern Turkey brings out the discussion of what caused the massive destruction and losses. Is it the earthquake that is called a natural disaster, or the mismanaged built environment?
On February 12, Qatar’s Fund for Development announced on Twitter that they are sending 10,000 World Cup portacabins and mobile housing units to the earthquake-affected areas in Turkey-Syria.
Environment Minister Murat Kurum said that 24,921 buildings across the region had collapsed or were heavily damaged in the quake, based on assessments of more than 170,000 buildings.
Architecture and urban planning can have a significant impact on post-disaster recovery efforts, as they are critical in the design and rebuilding of communities affected by disasters like the recent earthquake in Southern Turkey.
