Introduction Revit Flow 3.0:

This workshop dives deep into advanced parametric design using Revit, Grasshopper, and Rhino.Inside. Unlike typical software tutorials, this course focuses on creating complex nested curtain panels with an iris aperture, akin to the designs seen in the Institute du Monde Arabe by Jean Nouvel. Participants will explore innovative tools and methodologies to manipulate geometry and develop parametric families, enhancing their skills to tackle sophisticated architectural challenges.

The scope of the workshop:

This workshop is designed for participants with a basic understanding of Revit and parametric design. The complexity level is moderate to advanced. Throughout the workshop, participants will learn to create and manipulate complex geometries and parametric curtain panels using Grasshopper and Rhino.Inside Revit, focusing on practical applications in architectural design.

Objectives of Revit Flow 3.0:

Participants will work individually on exercises during the workshop. The workflow will include:

  • Session 1: Creating and manipulating geometry in Grasshopper, understanding complex data structures, and using plugins like Parakeet to generate different panel patterns.
  • Session 2: Participants will learn to use Rhino.Inside to seamlessly integrate the geometry into Revit and develop complex families (line-based, curtain, and adaptive) to create a parametric family within Revit, thereby gaining practical skills in software integration.

Software:

  • Revit 2024: Student licenses can be obtained from Autodesk.
  • Grasshopper: Included with Rhino.
  • Rhino.Inside: Plugin for integrating Rhino with Revit.
  • Parakeet Plugin: For pattern generation in Grasshopper.

Program of the workshop:

Day 1: Grasshopper and Geometry Manipulation (4 hours)

Introduction and Goals

  • Overview of workshop objectives and expected outcomes.
  • A brief introduction to the iris aperture concept.

Creating and Manipulating Base Geometry

  • Step-by-step guide to creating the base geometry in Grasshopper.
  • Understanding data structures and their manipulation.

Pattern Generation with Parakeet

  • Introduction to the Parakeet plugin and its features.
  • Applying Parakeet patterns to the iris aperture geometry.

Developing Parametric Control

  • Techniques for adding parametric control to the iris aperture based on solar data.
  • Implement parametric controls to adjust the aperture dynamically.
  • Finalize the parametric iris aperture model.
Day 2: Rhino.Inside and Revit Integration (4 hours)

Introduction to Rhino.Inside and Integration Capabilities

  • Overview of Rhino.Inside and how it connects Grasshopper with Revit.

Transferring Geometry to Revit

  • Practical demonstration of moving the iris aperture geometry from Grasshopper to Revit.

Creating Complex Revit Families

  • Detailed walkthrough on creating line-based, curtain, and adaptive families in Revit.
