Introduction to Neural Vernacular: Bio-Responsive Design:

As emerging technologies blur the boundaries between biology, computation, and spatial design, designers must move beyond static forms toward responsive, living systems. This workshop investigates the novel concept of ‘Neural Vernacular’, a speculative design approach where biological signals (instead of raw earth) directly inform material, wearable, and architectural logic.

To bridge rapid conceptualization with computational design, we pair generative AI with parametric modeling. Midjourney serves as an ideation tool, allowing students to quickly imagine and iterate complex, speculative visuals without the technical limitations. We then transition into Rhino 3D and Grasshopper to ground those visions into precise, algorithmic geometries.

By integrating Arduino and simulated bio-signal workflows, students learn how physiological data translates into dynamic parametric parameters, giving them a practical foundation in responsive, bio-integrated design without requiring physical lab hardware.

Methodology:

This workshop will encompass an exciting focus on speculative design. Attendees will explore the theoretical foundations of the concept of neural vernacular, examine sensor technology and biological signal translation, and apply parametric design logic to generate complex geometries. It also integrates visual speculation and provides critical takeaways on future technological outlooks.

Following a brief theoretical introduction, we will jump into speculative visualization leveraging AI image generation tools such as Midjourney to establish a conceptual vision and aesthetic direction. The parametric form-finding workflow will then allow us to translate these ideas into speculative geometries using Rhino and Grasshopper.

Finally, the simulation and computational integration portion of the workshop will take mathematically simulated internal biological signals to drive responsive, parametric parameters within the digital models. After that, we will look at the next steps of how students could potentially prototype and fabricate their designs with methods like 3D printing technology.

Founded in 2019, Studio Karrtesian (formerly Studio Aikin Karr) is a multidisciplinary creative entity that explores the nuances of cultural identity and alternative living through technology, design, and visual storytelling. The Studio’s work fuses culture, innovation, and speculative ideas imagining the the future of bio-integrated interfaces.

The founder, Karr is a creative technologist and entrepreneur based in the United Kingdom. He holds a B.Sc. in Architecture and Environmental Design from the University of Westminster, London, and an M.Sc. in Computer Science from Cardiff University. With experience working at a design–build firm in Nigeria, he also co-founded an award-winning startup focused on alleviating urban crime (Bushstrike Ltd.), supported by the National Space Research and Development Agency of Nigeria. 

In addition, Karr is a workshop instructor at Parametric Architecture Academy, where he has taught the integration of Artificial Intelligence in the design process. He also creates content that explores the intersections of Art, Design & Architecture, Science, Innovation, Philosophy, and Culture, using film and narrative to spark curiosity and dialogue across disciplines on Youtube.
