The Brise-Vent Havre Harbor Museum, developed by LYT-X Studio, proposes the adaptive reuse of an industrial windbreak into an engaging cultural and civic landmark. Located within the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Le Havre waterfront, the proposal reimagines the structure as a sleeping giant, rather than a static artifact.

LYT-X Studio’s Approach to Adaptive Reuse

Situated within the historic waterfront, an area that once functioned as the industrial heart of the region’s maritime operations, the project reclaims a site deeply embedded in Le Havre’s port history. The design, led by Dingdong Tang, Zehui Li, and Haisheng Xu of LYT-X Studio, envisions the intervention as a dynamic connecting urban hub. The primary structure, Brise-Vent, was originally engineered to shield the harbor from debilitating wind gusts, acting as a massive concrete sail. As port activities evolved and modernized, the structure lost its functional utility, becoming a forgotten concrete relic.

Drawing inspiration from the rhythmic movement of ocean waves and the fluid motion of a swimmer diving, the project emerged as a metaphor for Dive–Ascent. This narrative of adaptive reuse is translated into a formal architectural strategy that seeks to restore the disused harbor structure through a dialogue between the monumental past and a dynamic future.

Programmatic and Spatial Design

LYT-X Studio, known for its context-driven design, envisions the Brise-Vent project as a minimal and reversible intervention that merges with the historic background and adopts interrelated contemporary elements. The structure integrates new steel and reinforced concrete elements while preserving the original components of the project, enhancing sustainability goals. The façade utilizes a glass curtain wall system that contrasts with the opacity of the original concrete, creating a play of light and shadow while establishing a visual connection between the interior galleries and the maritime horizon.

The design preserves the original structure as the primary historical layer and introduces a contemporary intervention that extends the existing curved roof into a continuous, sweeping canopy. It not only serves as a symbolic gesture but also functions as a defining architectural element that integrates the land, water, and the community.

Flexible Design Strategy

The design prioritizes openness, extending cultural activity beyond enclosed galleries into shared public space through semi-open areas, a sheltered courtyard, and a new waterfront pier. Flexible interiors support exhibitions, performances, and education, while a central civic plaza links the city, museum, and waterfront through continuous public circulation.

Sustainable and Ecological Design

Sustainable urban architecture is central to the design of the Brise-Vent Havre Harbor Museum, emphasizing the reduction of energy use and the promotion of biodiversity in an industrial setting that is traditionally devoid of green space. Through these sustainable strategies, the project illustrates how heritage preservation and modern innovation can coexist.

The Dive–Ascent concept, with its dynamic roof, undulating underground spaces, and integrated waterfront connectivity, shapes a contemporary cultural architecture. Balancing ecological design and heritage, the Brise-Vent Museum acts as a manifesto for the future of maritime cities. By uniting storytelling, ecological design, and technological innovation, the Brise-Vent Museum reinforces this vision, presenting a future where daily life unfolds in balance with nature and heritage.
