Introduction to Additive Footwear Design:
This workshop explores 3d printed footwear design using procedural tools, allowing students to create professional-level manufacturing-ready 3d models of the highest quality using Houdini and blender. Students will learn about a variety of manufacturing technologies and will learn to unlock their full potential.
The Scope of the Workshop:
This workshop will dive deep into Houdini and Blender to design 3d printable shoes that may be printed using FDM, SLS, MJF, SLA, DLP, and other methods. The main focus will be on FDM and SLA, but workflows will be applicable to most 3d printing technologies. Students will be encouraged to print out their creations either on their own or with a manufacturer, however this is not compulsory and any manufacturing costs are not included in the price and are dependent on the manufacturer and design.
Program:
Day 1:
- Introduction to 3d printed shoes
- Different 3d printing techniques applied to footwear
- FDM in detail
- SLA in detail
- Introduction to blender
- Making a last from your foot in blender
- Introduction to Houdini
- Procedural modeling of base shape
- Procedural textures
- Overhangs
Day 2:
- Resin constraints
- Changing upper thickness and making openings
- Latticing the midsole
- Creating the heel cushion
- Translating textures into geometry
- Outsole details
- Modelling supports
