Disney has officially confirmed that Abu Dhabi will host a world-first attraction, a Disney floating castle designed to appear as if it is floating on water. The project, set to rise on Yas Island, marks the company’s debut in the Middle East and introduces a groundbreaking architectural concept that reimagines one of its most recognizable icons.

The announcement was shared in Disney’s We Call It Imagineering series, where Zach Riddley, Senior Vice President of Global Creative Strategy at Walt Disney Imagineering, explained the inspiration. “Abu Dhabi is a city on the water, and so we’re really excited about being able to incorporate water for the first time in the design of one of our castles,” he said. Unlike traditional Disney castles that stand on land, this version will integrate waterways and reflective surfaces, blending with the UAE capital’s coastal landscape.

Disney CEO Bob Iger has emphasized that the project will be “authentically Disney and distinctly Emirati,” following a similar approach taken with Shanghai Disneyland. While the exact theme of the Abu Dhabi castle remains under wraps, speculation among fans is already running high about which Disney story will shape its design.

The development is part of a broader expansion of Yas Island, already home to Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World, and SeaWorld Abu Dhabi. To ensure comfort in the region’s hot climate, the park is expected to feature climate-controlled rides and shaded walkways, similar to other mega attractions on the island.

Josh D’Amaro, Chairman of Disney Experiences, noted that projects of this scale typically require one to two years of design and four to six years of construction. Based on this timeline, Disneyland Abu Dhabi could open its doors as early as 2032 or 2033.

The floating castle marks a first for Disney and highlights Abu Dhabi’s drive to strengthen its place as a global tourism hub. For fans, it promises a fresh chapter in Disney’s storytelling, one where imagination meets the city’s unique character.
