At the entrance of Dongguan’s MIXC VILLAGE, design studio PILLS has created a large-scale floating cloud installation that transforms the commercial destination into an immersive narrative landscape. Developed for the first premium outlet project by China Resources Land, the installation acts as both a visual landmark and an experiential gateway, introducing visitors to the project’s resort-inspired identity in the Binhai Bay New Area.

Created as part of the larger “Atmospheric Installation Planning and Design” strategy, the project reflects MIXC VILLAGE’s positioning as a “slow-living island,” a place where retail, leisure, and nature intersect. The floating cloud becomes a spatial storytelling device that guides visitors into a commercial environment shaped around emotion, pause, and discovery.
Designing an Entrance Through Narrative Space

The design concept began with a broader narrative question: What kind of life do you want? From this idea, PILLS developed an imaginary storyline titled The Voyage to Fantasy Island, where visitors metaphorically leave behind the city and enter a slower, more restorative environment. The floating cloud marks the opening chapter of this journey.

Positioned near the Guangzhou–Shenzhen Riverside Expressway and facing the coastline, the installation was designed to be visible from long distances, reinforcing the identity of MIXC VILLAGE at an urban scale. Hovering above the entrance plaza, the cloud appears as a drifting object suspended between the sea, skyline, and white architectural volumes of the retail complex.

The installation also integrates practical urban functions within its sculptural presence. Beyond serving as a gateway marker, it contributes to the plaza’s microclimate through misting systems and shaded gathering areas, encouraging visitors to linger in the space rather than simply pass through.
Inflatable Membrane Technology and Dynamic Movement

The cloud installation relies on an advanced inflatable membrane system that allows it to shift in height and form continuously throughout the day. Inspired by the softness and fluidity of natural cloud formations, the final geometry was developed by merging eight spherical volumes into a continuous ring-like form through digital 3D modeling.

To achieve buoyancy and movement, the structure combines air membrane technology with intelligent control systems. Internally, the installation constantly monitors air pressure and dynamically adjusts the balance between helium and air in response to changing environmental conditions. This allows the cloud to gently rise and descend between approximately three, eight, and twenty meters in height during different times of the day, giving the installation a subtle breathing-like rhythm.
The project also incorporates a wind-speed monitoring mechanism that automatically lowers the structure during unsafe weather conditions, ensuring operational safety without compromising the visual experience. Coordinated hoist systems further enable smooth movement and controlled positioning across the plaza.

Complementing the floating structure is a timed misting system integrated into the membrane surface. The dispersed mist creates the illusion of an actual cloud while simultaneously cooling the surrounding public space, enhancing the sensory experience for visitors entering the development.
Transforming Into a Light Installation at Night

As daylight fades over Binhai Bay, the installation transitions into a large-scale illuminated artwork. During sunset, the reflective membrane absorbs changing tones from the sky, gradually shifting from warm golden hues to pink and violet shades.

At night, programmed lighting animations activate the cloud’s surface, transforming it into a luminous theatrical object suspended above the plaza. Inspired by waves, sunrise gradients, rosy skies, and constellations, the lighting sequences extend the project’s narrative theme while reinforcing the dreamlike atmosphere of MIXC VILLAGE.

The interaction between light projections and surrounding mist intensifies the visual depth of the installation, creating a cinematic environment that reactivates the commercial entrance after dark. The installation becomes an experiential centerpiece that encourages gathering, interaction, and extended engagement within the retail environment.
From Prototyping to Realization

The realization of the installation required the coordination of multiple technical systems, including membrane fabrication, internal piping, lighting infrastructure, intelligent controls, tethering mechanisms, and mist distribution networks. During development, the project underwent several rounds of engineering refinement and full-scale prototyping to test membrane performance, buoyancy, structural stability, and environmental responsiveness.

Custom attachment solutions were also developed to integrate water pipes and spray nozzles seamlessly into the membrane surface while preserving the installation’s clean visual appearance. Extensive factory testing and on-site adjustments ensured that the final structure maintained both technical precision and atmospheric softness.

By combining spatial narrative planning with responsive engineering systems, PILLS transforms the gateway installation into more than a sculptural object. The floating cloud becomes a symbolic transition between city life and leisure, reflecting how contemporary commercial environments increasingly rely on emotional storytelling and immersive public experiences.
