Lishui Airport is nearing completion under the creative vision of MAD Architects and lead designer Ma Yansong. Situated in the lush valley landscapes of Lishui, China—a city known for its thriving greenery and esteemed title as a “forest city”—the airport perfectly exemplifies a delicate balance between advanced infrastructure and environmental stewardship. Slated to be ready by the end of 2024, this airport not only represents a portal to the region but also signifies how architecture can blend with nature.
Aviation is becoming increasingly scrutinized for its ecological footprint, while Lishui Airport stands as a harbinger of progress towards the future. Its steep topography, reminiscent of the region, and the feather-like roof blur the lines between aesthetic design choice and overall philosophy of coexistence between human-made structures and the natural environment.
A Landmark Blending Architecture with Landscape
A Terraced Integration with Nature
Seen from the above perspective, Lishui Airport tells a visual narrative of great stunning beauty. Its terraced design is seen as a response to the challenging site elevation of nearly 100 meters. Instead of flattening the area, the architects embraced the natural contours of the land in creating a cascading layout in which the terminal, parking zones, and administrative offices are connected.
This design maintains the region’s ecological integrity, reducing environmental interruption while promoting a visual continuation between the airfield and surrounding forests and valleys. Terraces serve as the visual continuation of the landscape and connect urban development with nature.
The Roof That Takes Flight
The essence of the design for the airport is its striking silver-white roof. Working on the concept of lightness and fluidity of feathers, the aluminium-panelled roof is one of the aesthetic as well as functional elements. A 30-metre cantilever over the terminal main concourse allows natural light to permeate the interiors through a skylight, yet shades passengers seated underneath it. This play of light and shadow typifies the openness and warmth of the passenger experience.
The overall structure of the roof is supported by 14 umbrella-shaped columns that support it structurally and emulate tree trunks, all the while enhancing the theme of bringing nature into the airport. At dusk, as depicted in the photos, this building turns into a warm beacon of modernity within the peaceful landscape, a brilliant example of how human creativity can meet the natural world.
Passenger Experience Based on Comfort and Efficiency
Warm Interiors with a Human Touch
Inside the terminal, the design takes on a more intimate scale. Passengers are greeted by interiors featuring wood-toned finishes that contrast the reflective exterior. This choice of materials, combined with the concourse’s varying heights—ranging from 4.5 to 13 metres—creates a space that is both inviting and functional.
This “one-and-a-half-story” layout integrates arrival and departure areas into one compact space that maximizes functionality without compromising passenger comfort. A double-height lobby facilitates fluid movement, while the landscaped walkway connecting parking areas to the terminal provides a continuous feel from the outdoors into the indoors.
Capacity for Growth
Lishui Airport is already currently planned for taking 1 million passengers annually. However, by 2030, the airport shall be handling 1.8 million passengers and shall hit five million by 2050. Already, there are provisions made for the international terminal to allow the possibility of the development of the region it serves.
Sustainability Meets Innovation
Eco-Conscious Design Choices
Sustainability is at the core of the Lishui Airport project. The design of the terraced structure reduces its impact on the environment while using natural lighting and ventilation to minimize the consumption of energy. The roof features aluminium panels: lightweight, with high durability that does not consume much material, which makes the entire system quite efficient.
The airport and green spaces along the landscaped walkway blend functionality with beauty, enabling not only the aesthetic value of the facility but also biodiversity, aligning with the trends of global green eco-friendly infrastructure development.
Technological Advancements
The construction process reflects the current type of application of technology in modern architecture, from the detail roofing element to the flowing curves within. All aspects were perfectly planned with efficiency and precision as a motto, from the cutting images that describe the overall terminal, ranging from the sweeping skylight to its wooden-clad interior.
Topographical Challenges
Construction of Lishui Airport required no small feat as the region boasts challenging terrain. Indeed, significant levelling had to be done and a lot of engineering ingenuity put into it, not to forget the high degree of coordination necessary for the management of each level in this terraced layout.
Despite all the difficulties, the project never strayed from its vision-to build something that looks almost like an extension of nature-in an airport. This accomplishment endorses how dedicated and knowledgeable MAD Architects is about sustainable design.
Finding the Balance Between Growth and Preservation
When the Lishui Airport is finally completed, it will be put to one of the most important tests: to reconcile regional growth with environmental preservation. While the initial design is more focused on harmony with nature, increased passenger capacity and the potential for international use may strain this delicate balance. To what extent the airport can adapt to such challenges is crucial for its very survival and as a future model for infrastructure projects.
New Era in Regional Aviation
Lishui Airport is a transportation hub and an icon of what regional airports can be in the 21st century. Its design embodies the progressive vision where technology and sustainability are supported in and through the human experience. The images of its glowing terminal at sunset, of its terraced landscapes, and of its interior details reflect a project that would be both functional and poetic.
As aviation evolves, projects like Lishui Airport set a precedent for what is possible when design goes beyond mere utility. However, the ultimate success of this project will depend on its ability to adapt to future challenges without compromising its ecological and aesthetic ideals.
An Architectural Triumph with an Eye to the Future
Lishui Airport is a pioneering example of innovative, sustainable design that honors its natural surroundings while incorporating the future of aviation. As this garden-inspired hub opens its doors, however, its lasting legacy will be determined not by beauty alone but by whether it continues to maintain harmony with nature in the face of inevitable growth.
