The long-anticipated Zayed National Museum, designed by British architecture firm Foster + Partners, is set to open its doors this December on Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Island. Conceived as a tribute to the UAE’s founding president, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the museum will serve as the flagship institution of the Saadiyat Cultural District, home to a growing cluster of global cultural landmarks.

At the heart of the museum’s design are five soaring steel towers shaped like falcon wings, a nod to the national bird and the enduring Emirati tradition of falconry, a practice close to Sheikh Zayed’s heart. These aerodynamic structures are not purely symbolic; they function as solar thermal chimneys, drawing hot air up and out of the museum to regulate the internal temperature through passive cooling systems naturally.

The towers rise above a landscaped podium and a series of gallery spaces carved into the ground. According to Foster + Partners, the below-grade structure takes advantage of the earth’s insulating properties, creating an energy-efficient environment that balances the dramatic steel superstructure with an intimate, grounded visitor experience.

The museum’s sustainability strategy is embedded in every detail from low-level air intake via underground cooling pipes to daylighting strategies inspired by traditional Arabic architecture, where light and shadow are carefully manipulated to animate interior spaces.

Inside, the museum is designed around a dramatic central lobby, topped with skylights and flanked by six permanent galleries, a temporary exhibition space, and a range of public amenities, including cafés, shops, and informal performance areas. The galleries are suspended like pods around this central atrium, creating visual tension between the monumental and the sculptural.

Curated under the direction of Dr. Peter Magee, the Zayed National Museum’s exhibitions span over 300,000 years of history from Palaeolithic and Neolithic artefacts to Bronze and Iron Age relics, many discovered within the UAE. Highlights include an 8,000-year-old natural pearl discovered off the coast of Abu Dhabi and an original folio of the Blue Qur’an dating back to the 9th century.

The museum’s “To Our Ancestors” gallery will focus on the resilience of early Emirati communities, showcasing tools, irrigation systems, and trade links with other ancient civilizations in the Arabian Gulf.

Dr. Peter Magee, the Director of the Zayed National Museum in Abu Dhabi, remarked, “The narrative within the museum is guided by the enduring values of the UAE’s founding father, Sheikh Zayed. We look at those values and then, how they reflect social values which exist within the UAE both in the past and the present, and in the future.”

A central theme running through the museum’s narrative is religious tolerance, one of Sheikh Zayed’s foundational values. One gallery will highlight the 1959 discovery of a 7th-century Christian church on Abu Dhabi’s Sir Bani Yas Island, which Sheikh Zayed personally supported the excavation of, long before the formation of the UAE in 1971.

The museum also aims to play a pivotal role in research and education. According to Magee, it is committed to fostering a knowledge ecosystem, both through in-house scholarship and partnerships with institutions like the British Museum, which is lending key pieces to the opening displays.

Zayed National Museum’s opening aligns with Abu Dhabi’s broader cultural strategy. By 2030, the emirate aims to welcome nearly 40 million visitors annually as part of its Tourism Strategy 2030. The museum will join a prestigious group of institutions on Saadiyat Island, including the Louvre Abu Dhabi, the recently launched teamLab Phenomena, and upcoming projects like the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi and the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi.

With its combination of architectural ambition, cultural depth, and strategic national vision, the Zayed National Museum is poised to become the UAE’s most significant cultural landmark yet one that honors the past while shaping the future.
