Introduction to Radical Net-Zero Buildings:

This workshop will guide designers through the process of creating iconic and buildable, energy-efficient architectures, aiming to achieve Operational Net Zero status to reduce their impact on Climate Change. We will focus on studying a new workflow that merges free-form geometry modeling, parametric design, and environmental analysis to enhance the passive behavior of a building geometry while integrating renewables on-site. This workshop will equip designers with a radical new way of creating free-form geometry buildings to define the next generation of iconic, carbon-neutral architectures, with the vision of helping to reduce the associated carbon emissions of the construction sector.

The Scope of Radical Net-Zero Buildings:

The Scope would be to create a climate-conscious design, Creating mixed-used buildings with the potential to achieve Net Zero Operational Energy, using Sub-D and computational design tools in grasshopper 3D. Linking Solar analysis and energy modeling with honeybee tools would create a geometrical solution to produce its own energy directly from integrated solar photovoltaic panels.

Methodology:

During this workshop, we will follow three methodologies to achieve our concept design:

  • A) Free-form geometry modeling is the process of sculpting a model with digital clay using the latest version of Sub D for rhinos. With this, we will create a basic mass that will be the base for our building.
  • B) Parametric 3D modeling: Once the massing is defined, we will use scripting to create details and shading structures in our building façade, driven by solar dynamics. This will ensure we can control solar overexposure in the glazed areas and passively reduce the need for Air conditioning.
  • C) Environmental analysis: The Ladybug and Honeybee grasshopper plugins will help us create a simple feedback look that will help us evaluate the performance of our building proposal and define opportunities for optimization and improvement.

Objectives of Radical Net-Zero Buildings:

  • Understand the basics of environmental data-driven geometries and Operational Net Zero architectural design.
  • Forecast the impact of geometrical designs on operational energy performance.
  • Be capable of designing a real-world project at the proof-of-concept level, where environmental analysis is used to inform architectural decision-making.

Program:

Day 1:

  • Session 1  Sub-D façade modeling and Solar dynamics. (1.5h)
  • Session 2  Parametric shading on Sub-D surfaces controlled by Solar analysis. (1.5h)
  • Q&A

Day 2:

  • Session 3   Introduction to Energy Modelling with Honeybee. (1.5h)

Carlos Bausa MartinezSenior Associate and Head of Sustainability at Zaha Hadid Architects, joined Zaha Hadid Architects in 2019 as the Sustainability Team Lead, following almost five years at Foster + Partners, where he worked in the Specialist Modelling Group as an Environmental Design Analyst. His specialty in computational design and environmental simulation, combined with his expertise in sustainable architecture, allowed him to propose and find the ZHA in-house sustainability team to inform design decisions from the early stages in all ZHA design clusters.

After four years at ZHA, he became “Senior Associate and Head of Sustainability,” and with his team, they coordinate sustainability assessment tasks with external consultancy firms to ensure all projects are delivered, targeting reductions in environmental impact. The contribution of the Sustainability Team led by Carlos is helping ZHA target carbon reductions from Building Codes around the world and goals of International Sustainability Certifications like LEED,  BREEAM, and the Chinese Three Star Rating System. His work with the ZHA Sustainability Team has been publicly shown at exhibitions in China and London and in different venues.

Carlos received his bachelor’s in architecture at the University of Alicante, Spain, and his Master’s in Advanced Architecture at the Institute of Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC). Among his professional qualifications that certify and validate his expertise in Sustainability in construction, he has earned the following credentials: LEED AP® Building Design + Construction, LEED® Green Associate™, Qualified UK Non-Domestic Energy Assessor, and Construction Life Cycle Specialist. Carlos has also actively collaborated and mentored students in well-known institutions like Bartlett School of Architecture, Westminster University, IAAC Institute of Advanced Architecture of Catalonia, and the IED European Institute of Design at Barcelona.
