Populous’ design for MUCcc Arena was selected after a competition. They designed the multi-purpose venue to transform central Munich into a premier European entertainment district. Additionally, SWMunich Real Estate GmbH will build and operate the 20,000-capacity venue. Professor Latz of Latz + Partner from Kranzberg will landscape the venue.
Prof Dr Rudolf Hierl, chair of the design advisory board, said, “The presentation of the project has shown us how well-thought-out planning and sophisticated architecture can go hand in hand. The concert arena sets new standards for architectural and urban quality in our region. We are delighted to be able to support this project.” and added, “We were particularly pleased that the design advisory board praised the quality of the planning and architecture and saw great added value for the city and region.”
Germany’s Climate-Neutral Event Arena
The area’s landscape architectural design ensures good walking access to the nearest S-Bahn. The design of the surroundings of the MUCcc Arena also follows the recommendations of the experienced Munich traffic planners from Obermeyer to regulate arrival and departure traffic as best as possible. In addition to the road and path layout, another concept component is the recommendation to build a parking garage and a hotel directly next to the concert arena to relieve the flow of traffic and visitors.
“We are proud to realise a project like the concert arena in our city, which is not only architecturally impressive, but also offers enormous economic and cultural advantages.”

Furthermore, the seating is arranged in a horseshoe shape (270 degrees), clearly focusing on the multifunctional stage. The arena will be located in a new green space next to LabCampus, Munich Airport’s technology and innovation center. Also, the stadium will be Germany’s first climate-neutral event area, created by climate-based planning to reduce carbon footprint during the construction of the operating phase.
Lorenz Schmid, Director of SWMUNICH: “We see the decision by the city council as both an incentive and an obligation because we will be building and operating Germany’s first climate-neutral event arena for the benefit of the entire region. The new arena will put Munich in the Champions League of indoor concert venues.”
