LifeCycles Festival

The new LifeCycles Festival gathers leaders in architecture, projects, and urban development in Ghent.
No fewer than 40 speakers from the architecture, urban design, academic, and real estate worlds will come together on 28-30 September at LifeCycles in Ghent, a new international forum about the future and quality of our cities, architecture, and buildings. Responding to evolutions in technology, ecology, communities, and mobility, LifeCycles wants to stir up the debate about the design and interpretation of our future living environment.

Impressive line-up

Reinier de Graaf from the iconic architectural firm OMA, the revolutionary Carlo Ratti, C40 director Hélène Chartier, BIG’s sustainability director Tore Banke, Arup’s innovation leader Jan Wurm, head of the New European Bauhaus Xavier Troussard to the progressive Chris Precht or Taro Okabe – director of the Paris office of Pritzker winner Shigeru Ban… it’s only a small selection from the impressive LifeCycles program.
The LifeCycles program is built around 6 topics: a city’s lifecycles, architecture, construction, environment, technology, and society. These themes will be approached during the event with experts from different domains. In addition to the many international speakers, some Belgian leading names will also take the stage, such as Julien De Smedt, Gilles Retsin, Xavier De Kestelier, Philippe Block, Nicolas Bearelle, and Johan Anrys from 51N4E. The last few names will be added to the program in the coming weeks.

A unique location that matches the content of the event

Hosted by the trendsetting Belgian brownfield project developer Revive, the LifeCycles event will take place at the Vynckier site in Ghent. Located on the city’s edge and harbor, this site, with its characterful Manchester buildings, is iconic for the Ghent cityscape. After years of vacancy, Revive will, in consultation with the City of Ghent and according to a master plan by ORG Architecten, redevelop the site into a lively working environment and innovation ecosystem with a focus on energy transition and industry 4.0.

“This site fits perfectly with the themes covered by LifeCycles. With the ambitious repurposing of heritage, the evolution from a closed to a public character, technology in the design and construction process, design of the outdoor space, reuse of materials, sustainable energy, and so much more… this site provides the ideal context.” says LifeCycles initiator Reggy Van den Branden.
Besides Revive, the event is supported by several network organizations, media partners, and leading brands.

Wide variety of topics

The more than 40 speakers will be spread over 3 days and 3 stages, all in 1 location. The doors open every day at 2 pm, with a program that continues into the evening. The program page of the website www.lifecycles.be shows which speaker will be present on which day. In addition to a 30-minute presentation, there will also be some moderated debates, and the speakers will be present to answer questions.
Presentation titles such as “sensible cities,” “archeology of the future,” “re-wilding the cities,” “eco-parametric architecture,” or “zero-carbon neighborhoods” confirm the versatility of topics. From circular construction to smart cities, technology in the design and construction process to affordable housing, new mobility, future of energy, biodiversity, innovation strategies, sustainable urban development, and much more, all topics will be discussed in Ghent end of September.
