Introduction to 3D-Printed Wall Panels:

This workshop will teach you how to design and fabricate custom 3D-printed wall panels for interior or facade applications. Through a mix of presentations, tutorials, and hands-on sessions, you’ll learn essential design principles, explore pattern generation, and gain control over the fabrication process using Rhino, Grasshopper, and desktop 3D printers.

Scope of 3D-Printed Wall Panels:

3D-Printed Wall Panels workshop focuses on both design and fabrication. You will start by developing your panel designs in Rhino and Grasshopper, integrating connections and assembly systems, and learning how to adapt your ideas for 3D printing. On the fabrication side, you’ll create custom toolpaths and G-codes in Grasshopper, optimizing the 3D printing process for your designs.

By the end of the workshop, you’ll have completed a modular interior wall panel composed of nine elements, ready for assembly.

The workshop will introduce different approaches to designing a 3D-printable wall panel system. You will explore techniques applicable to home 3D printers using conventional materials like PLA filament spools and larger-scale 3D printing technologies, including concrete 3D printing and large-format FDM printers.

What you will learn:

  • Master design principles for 3D-printed wall designs.
  • Generate and refine patterns with algorithms in Grasshopper.
  • Learn custom G-code generation for precise control over printing.
  • Complete a 3D-printed panel prototype.

Program:

Day 1: Design in Grasshopper

  • Introduction Lecture: Fundamentals of 3D printing and wall panel design.
  • Worksession 1: Pattern exploration 1.
  • Worksession 2: Pattern exploration 2.
  • Design Exercise: Wall panel pattern design.

Day 2: Fabrication in Grasshopper

  • Review of Design Exercise: Design adaptations for printability.
  • Worksession 3: Integrating connections and assembly systems.
  • Worksession 4: Custom toolpaths and G-code generation.
  • Q&A & final tips.

Software & Plugins:

Workshop Notes:

  • The workshop is suitable for everyone, from beginners to advanced users. No prior experience is required, and the introductory session ensures all participants are prepared for the advanced topics.
  • Materials include PLA filament and 0.4mm and 0.8mm nozzles (Demonstration prints will be done with 0.8mm nozzle).
  • Please ensure you have all the software installed before the workshop starts. Software installation is NOT a part of the workshop.
