Desert X AlUla 2026, an international exhibition, returns as a powerful open-air art experience, transforming AlUla’s dramatic desert landscape and heritage into a living gallery of site-specific installations. Returning with its fourth edition in Saudi Arabia, the exhibition runs from January 16 to February 28 (2026) as a key highlight of the AlUla Arts Festival, where contemporary art, design, and culture come together against an ancient backdrop. Desert X AlUla 2026 brings together bold contemporary works by Saudi and international artists, celebrating AlUla as a place shaped by centuries of cultural exchange.

Desert X is produced by Desert Biennial, a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating international contemporary art exhibitions rooted in desert landscapes. Through free, public, site-responsive installations by artists from all around the world, the initiative activates remote environments while engaging thoughtfully with local ecologies and Indigenous communities. These exhibitions foster cultural exchange and offer artists a powerful platform to explore ecological, cultural, spiritual, and deeply human questions shaped by the desert context.

Located about 1,100 kilometers from Riyadh in northwestern Saudi Arabia, AlUla is a place where nature and history unfold on a monumental scale. Spanning more than 22,500 square kilometers, the region weaves together a fertile oasis valley, dramatic sandstone formations, and landscapes shaped by thousands of years of human civilization. Once home to the Lihyan and Nabataean kingdoms, AlUla carries deep layers of cultural memory, most famously at Hegra, Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the region’s most remarkable archaeological treasures. A perfect destination for the exhibitions, where it unfolds in an open and culturally rich context.

The theme is ‘Space Without Measure,’ drawing inspiration from Lebanese-American poet Kahlil Gibran. The exhibition invites visitors to experience art as an open, boundless conversation with landscape and time. Curated by Wejdan Reda and Zoé Whitley, with artistic direction by Neville Wakefield and Raneem Farsi, Desert X AlUla opens on January 16. The exhibition features 10 newly commissioned, site-specific works by leading artists across generations. Set within AlUla’s dramatic terrain, each installation becomes a landmark on an imaginary map, unfolding as wonders that range from poetic utopias to unexpected vistas and immersive landscapes.

Wejdan Reda, Curator, Desert X AlUla 2026, said, ‘AlUla’s landscape is a living archive of stories, traditions, and encounters that span centuries. For this edition of Desert X AlUla 2026, artists have engaged with its valleys and historic routes to create works that honor its landscape while opening new spaces for imagination. Inspired by the poetic vision of Kahlil Gibran, ‘Space Without Measure’ asks us to contemplate the boundless creativity that emerges when art responds to place. Each commission invites visitors to discover AlUla through fresh perspectives and moments of reflection shaped by its land, light, and history.’

Zoé Whitley, Curator, Desert X AlUla 2026, said, ‘Through this theme, the temporary artwork installations serve as landmarks for reflection and connection, guiding visitors through shared spaces of hope and communion. From immersive environmental visions to newly imagined vistas, each artwork invites visitors to wander through a different facet of AlUla’s nature and history in ways that are both subtle and transformative.’
