The Spire dress, is a 3d printed wearable designed by Alexis Walsh and Ross Leonardy to be on the show at New York Fashion Week in 2016. The Spire Dress is composed of over 400 individual tiles that were printed in SLS nylon by Shapeways and assembled by hand with metal ring connectors. The main aspiration of this workshop is to precisely develop a critical argument based on an individual research, which will translate into pure geometrical-formal exploration; the format will be an ongoing deskcrit symposium with the participants, meeting them and discussing their individual architectural project, along with daily tutorials to progress their knowledge of the software techniques.

Rather than assignments, the research will be divided into stages and strategies. Based on an image, the participants will develop an expertise in a specific Topological (Geometrical) territory; this territory will emerge for a hybrid between 3 main intellectual fields, from the following menu: Structure, Skin and Mass.

In 2012, David Mirvish, founder of Mirvish Productions, and Toronto-born starchitect Frank Gehry have designed a massive, mixed-used project planned to transform Toronto's downtown arts and entertainment district. The Mirvish+Gehry vision was to include a triad of residential towers perched on top a six-story, wooden podium inspired by the site’s industrial past and covered in a ‘cloud-like’ sculptural skin.

Jan Knippers is head of the Institute for Building Structures and Structural Design (ITKE) at the Faculty for Architecture and Urban Design at the University of Stuttgart. In 2001 he cofounded, together with Thorsten Helbig in Stuttgart, Knippers Helbig Advanced Engineering; and in 2018 Jan Knippers Ingenieure. Knippers focuses on efficient structural design for international and architecturally demanding construction projects involving solid timber, steel, and glass constructions. He specializes in the design of complex-shaped and highly efficient roof and facade structures, as well as in research and development on the use of fiber-based materials and biomimetic structures in architecture.

Kanye West’s Star Wars-inspired project, YEEZY H

Kanye West’s Star Wars-inspired project, YEEZY Home, strikes back. The pod-like, affordable prefab YZY SHLTRS riff on Luke Skywalker’s childhood home. They feature basket-like facades with an oculus opening that funnels light down into the interior.

Construction on the prototype development for YEEZY Home started last summer and was abruptly halted when neighbours complained about noise and disruption from the California site. The unfinished structures were threatened with demolition – but a fresh photograph West revealed on Twitter appears to show work is back underway.

Or2 project, located in #London, and designed by Orproject is a single surface roof structure that reacts to sunlight. The polygonal segments of the surface react to ultra-violet light, mapping the position and intensity of solar rays.

When in the shade, the segments of Or2 are translucent white. However when hit by sunlight they become colored, flooding the space below with different hues of light. During the day Or2 becomes a shading device passively controlling the space below it. At night Or2 transforms into an enormous chandelier, disseminating light which has been collected by integrated photovoltaic cells during the day into the surrounding areas.

Astonishing photo published by @onarchitecture from the Oodi Helsinki Central Library by @ala_architects in 📍#Helsinki #Finland. Oodi occupies a hugely significant site in central Helsinki: facing the steps of the Finnish parliament building, the Eduskuntatalo across the Kansalaistori square, a public space flanked by major civic institutions.

The siting of Oodi opposite the Eduskuntatalo was chosen to be symbolic of the relationship between the government and the populace, and act as a reminder of the Finnish Library Act’s mandate for libraries to promote lifelong learning, active citizenship, democracy and freedom of expression. It also places the new library in the heart of Helsinki’s cultural district, close to many of the capital’s great institutions.

XtreeE prints concrete 3D printed benches with complex patterns. The French Startup XtreeE – 3D Concrete Printing Specialist – is presenting one of his latest works in collaboration with Studio 7.5, a German design firm. Together, they created three 3D printed concrete benches, all with the same woven pattern. The 3D printed benches will be part of Studio 7.5’s bespoke street furniture collection.

These 3D printed benches meet the many application cases of 3D concrete printing. Whether houses designed using 3D technologies such as in Nantes or furniture, there is no doubt that it has the potential to upset the construction market. Many manufacturers have embarked on this niche, such as the French startup XtreeE, which has developed a 6-axis robot capable of extruding its own concrete mix.
