Hangzhou Xiaohe Park, designed by Kengo Kuma and Associates, is located along the Grand Yun River in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China. “We conceived this park to be a new local hub for both culture and history legacy while gently merging into the vibrant urban life in Hangzhou.” said designers.
They constructed a web-like ETFE canopy that extended over the entire site, linking all the buildings and serving as a welcoming structure for visitors approaching from any direction. In addition, they preserved four historical warehouses and seven oil tanks, transforming them into a theater, event space, shops, and vertical connections as part of the renovation process.
The warehouse buildings in Hangzhou Xiaohe Park were designed with a thoughtful approach to preservation. Corten steel was strategically chosen to complement the exposed concrete and red bricks, maintaining the unique industrial identity of the park. This deliberate choice ensures that the architectural integrity of the buildings is preserved while also adding to the aesthetic appeal of the overall design.
