Located above London Bridge Station, it integrates offices, restaurants, hotels, and public observation spaces. The Whitney Museum of American Art, completed in 2015, is one of Piano’s most significant recent cultural buildings. Located at the southern entrance of the High Line, the museum responds directly to Manhattan’s urban energy. Its industrial appearance references the surrounding neighborhood while its terraces and outdoor spaces connect visitors with the city. Unlike traditional museums that separate art from the outside world, the Whitney creates a continuous relationship between interior galleries, outdoor terraces, and urban views. Another important recent project is the expansion of the Kimbell Art Museum, completed in 2013. Working near the original building by Louis Kahn, Piano faced the difficult task of adding new space without competing with one of modern architecture’s masterpieces. He began as one of the pioneers of High-Tech architecture, yet he moved beyond technological expression toward a deeper exploration of human experience.
