UNStudio is looking for an Advanced Design Architects to join their team at Shanghai office.

As an international architectural firm, UNStudio is active in the broadest fields of architecture. Our project portfolio covers every aspect of architecture, ranging from small to large scale projects, research and theory. The atmosphere within our offices in Amsterdam, Shanghai, and Hong Kong is international, multidisciplinary and ambitious, but also open, non-hierarchical, team-based and friendly, with attention to personal well-being, knowledge development and career planning.

We are currently looking for Advanced Design Architects to join our Shanghai office. The ideal candidates should have strong design sensibilities, effective management and team leadership skills, a flexible mentality, strong communication skills, and later stage experience on constructed projects.

Skills:

  • 5-8+ years of experience as a Design Architect who has overseen or assisted in overseeing a team
  • Documented experience in multiple phases of the design, with the ability to implement a design concept from preliminary studies through to construction and detailing
  • Strong aesthetic sensibilities and design skills, with keen awareness of how concepts drive and integrate design, language, constraints, and regulations.
  • Experience in geometric optimization and fabrication processes for complex geometry and curvature
  • Technical problem solver with the ability to work out architectural solutions through innovative thinking (documented through construction and shop drawings/details)
  • Good team player with the ability to organize both own work and others, clearly communicate with the Director, and coach/motivate team members
  • Proactive and self-motivated, with a continuous desire to learn and grow
  • Fluent English communication skills with additional fluency in Mandarin a plus
  • Good knowledge of Rhinoceros (Grasshopper and RhinoScript/Python a plus), AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite, etc.
  • Professional BIM experience on geometrically complex projects (preferably Revit) a plus

Softstone is a mid-rise building located in the city center of a developing metropolitan area. Urban densification and land-use changes are resulting in proximities of existing low-rise residential blocks with mid to high-rise offices or commercials. Within this context, Softstone introduces an alternative architectural solution for a mid-rise office project built with local stone.

The monolithic volume is constructed of pre-crafted slabs of varying sizes that are supported with pre-fabricated folded metal plates, which then together are dry-assembled on-site. Soft transitions from small to large components create curved surfaces out of the hard stone. The focal points of these gradients define the entrances and openings, morph the building skin, adjust the skyline, and connect the backyard landscape to the staircase all the way to the rooftop.

Design strategies:

  • Blurring the threshold of the building envelope to orient the views up toward the sky and the mountain chains of Tehran in balconies or iwans, and down toward the street behind the panoramic windows of the multi-purpose working spaces;
  • Activating the backside of the project by connecting it to the rooftop on one side, and dissolving it softly to an animated carpet-like landscape that embraces the only existing tree and it integrates new plants;
  • Designing the given building block as a volume rather than separated two-dimensional facades. This integration is done through the three-dimensional extension of the east and west surfaces to the front and back, as well as the roof as the fifth elevation and the back yard carpet;
  • Controlling the assembly tolerances by compensating the minor deviations in the hand-cut stones with the higher accuracy in the production of the folded exposed metal plates;
  • Minimizing the material leftovers by discretizing the continuous surfaces into elements with varying sizes ranging from 60mm or extra-small to 1430mm or extra-large;

About Sina Mostafavi:

Sina Mostafavi is a practicing architect, researcher, and educator with expertise in computational design and architectural robotics. He is the founder of award-winning studio SETUParchitecture, a firm that internationally offers consultancy for innovative design solutions to construction processes. He teaches and leads design studios at the Delft University of Technology and Dessau International Graduate School of Architecture (DIA) at Bauhaus, where he is also the director of DARS studio. He is a senior researcher at TU Delft, where he has been the manager and coinitiator of the Robotic Building Lab at Hyperbody group of of TU Delft.

About Arturo Tedeschi:

Arturo Tedeschi is an architect and computational design specialist with more of ten years of experience in the avant-garde segment of architecture and industrial design (furniture, automotive, installations, products, footwear). He works as a consultant for leading companies, providing services and training related to algorithmic modeling, complex geometry, digital fabrication and data driven design. He is the author of Parametric Architecture with Grasshopper and AAD Algorithms-Aided Design. He taught and was an invited speaker at Architectural Association School (London), Politecnico di Milano, IUAV (Venice), The University of Sydney, Dubai Institute of Design and Innovation, University of Edinburgh, Universidad Europea (Madrid). His personal work has been featured on international magazines and exhibited worldwide. He has collaborated with major architecture and design firms, including Zaha Hadid Architects and Ross Lovegrove.

About Hamid Hassanzadeh:

Hamid Hassanzadeh is an Iranian architect, computational designer, researcher, and speaker. He studied his architecture education in Iran. With eight years of experience in this field, he worked on multiple projects in Iran, Turkey, Russia, Kuwait, and the USA. Early in 2016, he established Parametric Architecture magazine by starting from Instagram. Since then, he interviewed many architects and designers, conducted and supported workshops, organized events and lectures, and globally shared knowledge and information about computational and parametric design tools.
